*) Precious coral or red coral is the common name given to Corallium rubrum. Owing to its intense coloration and glossiness, precious coral skeletons have been harvested since antiquity for jewellery. It is found mainly in the Mediterranean Sea, although the shallower of these habitats have been largely depleted. Nowadays red coral is still in great demand but -to protect the wildlife- the trade in Corallium rubrum is restricted according to CITES, an international treaty. By law, the possession and trade in Precious coral jewellery is permitted when the object was made at least 50 years ago. We guarantee this brooch to be even over 150 years old.
